What is a file attachment?

Text is not the only kind of data you can transmit in an email message. You can also send pictures, word processing documents, spreadsheets, audio clips, video clips, programs, or any other type of computer file by 'attaching' the file to your message, and sending the file along with your email.

Similarly, you can receive any type of computer file from others who send you messages with attached files. 'Attachments' are specially encoded so that when they arrive at the destination computer, they can be opened by the same program that was used to create them.
