I cannot set up my modem using Automatic Modem Setup in Juno 2.0 because Juno cannot identify my modem. (Juno 2.0)

If Juno cannot identify your modem, first determine which version of Juno you are using. If you are using Juno 1.49 or earlier, you should upgrade to the latest version of Juno.

To determine which version of Juno is installed on your computer:

  1. Open Juno
  2. Go to the Help menu and select About Juno.
  3. The version of Juno currently installed on your computer will be displayed at the top of the About Juno window that appears.

If you would like to upgrade your Juno software, you can download the latest version for free by going to http://my.juno.com/s/download

To get a copy of the Juno CD-ROM in the mail, call us toll-free at 1-800-654-5866. Please note, there is a one-time $10.00 processing fee for the CD-ROM that includes shipping and handling.

The next step is to check the speed of your modem. To use Juno, your modem's speed must be a minimum of 9600 bps. If your modem's speed is lower than 9600 bps, you will need to upgrade your modem.

If you have tried to set up your modem manually and could not find your modem in Juno's modem database, you will have to add your modem to Juno's modem database.

Setting up your modem manually

If you have an external modem, make sure it is turned on, plugged into the phone jack, and securely connected to your computer. An internal modem will turn on automatically when you turn on your computer.

To set up your modem manually in Juno 2.0:

  1. Go to the Connection menu and select Modem Setup.
  2. On the Modem Setup screen, click Manual Modem Setup.
  3. Select the full name of your modem from the Modem list.
  4. Click the Com Port arrow to select the communications port to which your modem is connected. If you are not sure which port to select, select Auto-detect.
  5. Click the Port Speed arrow to select the highest possible port speed for your modem. If you are not sure which speed to select, select Auto-detect.
  6. Click Setup Modem. Juno will start comparing your modem to the modems in Juno's modem database. When Juno successfully identifies your modem, a message will appear. Click OK.
  7. If Juno cannot identify your modem exactly, the Modem Selection window will appear. Select your modem from the list and click OK.

When Juno successfully identifies your modem, a message will appear. Click OK. If your modem is not on the list, click All Modems to see all the modems in Juno's modem database.

  8. In the Select from Full Modem Database window, select your modem from the list and click OK.

Juno will test your modem to make sure it is set up correctly. If your modem is also not in this list, you will need to add your modem.

Adding a modem to Juno

Before you can add your modem, you will need to find out technical information about your modem as well as the correct commands to use in its initialization string. To find this information out, contact your modem manufacturer (or refer to your modem manual) and ask for a string that will command your modem to use the following settings.

  • Set factory defaults.
  • Hardware flow control on
  • DCD (Data Carrier Detect) set to follow line carrier
  • Disconnect on DTR (Data Terminal Ready) signal
  • Data compression off

With this information, you can add your modem to Juno.

To add your modem to Juno's modem database in Juno 2.0:

  1. Go to the Connection menu and select Modem Setup.
  2. On the Modem Setup screen, click Manual Modem Setup.
  3. Click Add New Modem.
  4. In the Add Modem Entry window, click the Modem list arrow to select a modem from that list that may be similar to your modem. For example, if there is a modem in the list by the same manufacturer as your modem, select it. If you do not see a similar modem in the list, select the Hayes Compatible modem that has the same speed as your modem.
  5. In the Modem name box, type the name of your modem or My Modem.
  6. In the Setup commands box, edit the initialization string with the technical information from your modem manufacturer or modem manual.
  7. Click OK. Your modem name now appears in the Modem list. Select it and complete the manual modem setup.
