I cannot use the Manual Modem Setup feature (Juno 2.0)

Before you set up your modem manually, you can use a program on your computer called HyperTerminal to learn what kind of modem you have. Once you get this information, you can use it to set up your modem manually.

To use HyperTerminal to learn about your modem:

  1. Close any programs that are running, including Juno and other communications programs (for example, fax software).
  2. To start HyperTerminal, click the Windows Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to HyperTerminal, and click HyperTerminal.
  3. Set HyperTerminal to whichever COM port your modem is currently connected to.
  4. In the blank terminal window, type ATI0 and press Enter.
  5. Repeat step 3, typing ATI1 through ATI9. These commands are standard in many modems and the response your modem returns to these commands may give you more information about your modem.

When viewing your modem responses, pay particular attention to the following:

  • The name of a modem manufacturer. For example, U.S. Robotics or Supra.
  • The response of ATI3. If RPI or "Rockwell Protocol Interface" is returned, then your modem is a Rockwell Protocol Interface (RPI) modem and needs a special configuration.
  • The response of ATI6 or ATI7. If RC288 or RCV288" is returned, then your modem needs a special initialization string. When setting up your modem manually, use this initialization string: &F&C1&D2&K3%C0 (unless you have a Supra modem. If you have a Supra modem, you should be able to set up your modem automatically).

For more information on using HyperTerminal, please consult your Windows user's manual.
