What is V.92?

Now you can take advantage of V.92 with Juno!

V.92 is the latest in modem technology. With your V.92 modem, you will be able to*:

  • Get rid of your second phone line!
If you have Call Waiting from your local phone company, your V.92 modem with its 'Modem On Hold' software can let you know you have a call. You will be able to put your modem 'on-hold' and answer your phone without losing your Internet connection!* If you have Caller ID, your Modem-On-Hold software will let you know who is calling!

  • Get online faster!
Using V.92 technology, your V.92 modem learns and remembers how you usually connect to the Internet. This shortens the time it takes for your modem and Juno to connect, so you can start surfing faster.

How do I take advantage of V.92?

First, you need a V.92 modem. Click here to find out how to get one.

Second, you must connect to the Internet via a V.92 compatible access number. You can identify V.92 numbers by looking for the V.92 label next to certain access numbers on the Access Number page on the Juno Web site. Click here for detailed instructions on how to find and use our V.92 compatible access numbers. Please check with your phone service provider to ensure that you will not incur any additional charges for your selected access numbers.

Third, if you want to use the V.92 Modem-On-Hold feature, you will need call waiting service from your telephone service provider and compatible Modem-On-Hold software. This software should come with your modem, but if not, you will need to contact your modem vendor's tech support or download it from their Web site. To ensure that your software is compatible with our service, we recommend that you contact the manufacturer of your modem directly. To view a list of modems and Modem-On-Hold software that have been tested with our service, please click here for more information.

Are V.92 access numbers available everywhere?

No. Currently, V.92 access numbers are available only in certain Juno service areas. However, we expect to add more V.92 access numbers in the future, so keep checking our Access Number page and look for the V.92 label.

How can I tell if my modem is V.92 compatible?

If you have an external modem, you will normally see V.92 indicated on the label at the bottom of your modem. If you cannot find this label or if you have an internal modem, you will need to perform the steps below:

    Windows 95/98/ME/NT users

    1. Click on the Windows Start button.
    2. Point to Settings and select Control Panel.
    3. Double-click on the Modems icon. A Modem Properties screen will appear. If you have a V.92 modem, you will see V.92.

    Windows XP users

    1. Click on the Windows Start button.
    2. Select Control Panel.
    3. Double-click on the Phone and Modem options icon. A Modem Properties screen will appear. If you have a V.92 modem, you will see V.92.

Note: For both internal and external modems, if you see V.90, your modem is not V.92 compatible.

Where can I get a V.92 modem?

V.92 modems are gradually becoming the industry standard, so you should be able to find them wherever modems are sold. If you are purchasing a new computer, it may or may not have a V.92 modem already installed.

Will my V.92 modem work if I connect over a non-V.92 access number?

Yes. V.92 modem will allow you to connect to the Internet and surf as you normally would over non-V.92 access numbers. However, you will not be able to take advantage of the special features of your V.92 modem, including Modem-On-Hold.

*Not all V.92 features are currently supported. Modem-On-Hold functionality limited to four minutes of hold time after which your online session will be disconnected. Modem-On-Hold functionality may not available during the login process.
